Quarto folder with embossed borders, die cut edges, 8h x 10h. Central
image of a red poppy, the petals lift to reveal a satirical, unpleasant
image of a woman; the caustic poem refers to a flaunting flower, even
shunned by insects! An unusual, early comic valentine. 75.
2. Butterflies! Raphael TUCK movable, a girl riding astride a
butterfly, 6h x 3h; and a postcard with an embossed butterfly, silver
and blue. 25.
3. Nine charming assorted Valentine postcards, used. 10.
4. Two die-cut red hearts: Black couple, by TUCK, Brundage design,
opens; two young girls, applied ribbon, by VOLLAND; each is 5h, and two
3h heart tokens. 30.
5. Love token, 4h x 4 1/2h, white silk ribbon, sewn along the edges,
and a simple bow. Poem hand-written seems to refer to the strength of a
woman, circa 1850. 35.
6. Two album cards with frayed silk fringe, 5 1/2h x 6
1/2h: Valentine by Elizabeth Bullock Humphrey, for PRANG, circa
1880; and Easter, unsigned, with double-sided images of cherubs. 30.
7. Love letter, 7 ½h square, to Charles R. Whippleton, /Feb 14th
/57. Paper is worn and damaged, but beautifully requests his love,
gfrom your admirer, Peggyh. 40.
8. Portion of a page of a Valentine Writer broadside, circa 1850, with mottoes, 6h x 9h. 75.
9. Two lovely images: one is a box-lid with image of a genteel woman
giving bread to a poor child, titled, Bienfaisance (Charity) 6 1/2h x
9h, the other, print from a book, 18th century-style image titled, Le
Bouquet dfAmour (Lovefs Bouquet), shows Cupid atop a plinth, aiming his
arrow; and two more images on album cards. 35.
10. ESTHER HOWLAND: H-15 printed in red on reverse; 3 1/2h x 4
3/4h. Lace shows a couple, and a sailboat with swans, is unsigned,
except for embossing of a fleur-de-lis within a wreath, repairs to
lace. Orange glazed paper, early motto attached, scrap with
Scottish-inspired youth and dove. 100.
11. Lace octavo, single card with applied MULLORD lace; hand-cut floral
scraps, and a stocking; writing requests that mending is needed. 30.
12. Two embossed octavos. First: with applied motto and gold designs,
silver Dresden cherub inside, displayed through gauze opening, once
folded. Second: MEEK lace with applied rose, Dresden love knot, and the
written message, gI am truly thineh. 50.
13. Octavo (4 1/2 x 7) – embossed blank with applied panel of gilded
lace, bordered with multiple floral scraps. Central: large image of a
camellia. Interior motto. 25
