Lot 1 Whitney W 3 1/2
Embossed folder is printed in blue, 2 red wafers beneath applied lace
paper, partially gilded, and mounted on paper hinges. Central opening
shows die-cut of young girl carrying bundled twigs; embellished with
five scraps. (4.5x6.5) Fine. 25
Lot 2 Whitney W 2 1/2
Pale blue and white folder, lace paper applied over red corner wafers,
paper springs, embellished with scraps of flowers and birds. Central
oval opening covered with a fine applied lace, and a die-cut of an
elegant woman. Lifts to reveal green paper with tiny motto. Shows
wear (4x6.5) 15
Lot 3 Esther Howland’s New England Valentine Company,
NEV Co 10 Embossed card with blue edging, applied lace with her classic
paper springs and red wafers,three scraps. Interior has pasted motto.
Embossed company name on reverse. (3x4) Excellent 35
Lot 4 Thoughts of Love booklet.
8 poetic pages, 4 images, tied with pink tasseled cord. Bright
chromolithography, cover image of Victorian woman framed by floral
heart. Circa 1910(5x5) 15
Lot 5 Louis Prang chromolithographed
card Valentine. Front image of a young girl with butterfly and flowers;
reverse, drawing of hollyhocks and greeting, two cards have silk fringe
between them, partially detached. Dated, 1882, and signed by the
artist:LBH (Lizbeth Bullock Humphrey) (5x6.5) 40
Lot 6 Express Man Comic Valentine
depicts express delivery driver, in top hat, with his horse-dawn cart.
Pencil notations on box and beside poem, and signed From Old
Beaver. Separated 2 inches along one fold, and ink-stained. Condition
fair. 97x9.5) 15
Lot 7 Signed, WOOD, cameo-embossed lace in
beautiful pattern showing woman and man in 18th century attire,
cherubs, doves, cornucopia, church; scrap of a young girl,
flower, and butterfly; glue spot where a scrap may once have been.
Inside, vivid page with poem and geometric designs in blue, red,
orange., dated in ink, 1878 (5x7) 35
Lot 8 Lace Quarto with watermark: NASH
Open-work cameo-embossed lace in wide border design with central
medallion, which is embossed with gilt accented border; the interior
features an original watercolor of roses and pansies, and tender
message. Lace is toned, spotted, with bent corner, and segment of lace
missing, lower right. Poor condition. Circa 1840s. 50
Lot 9 Calligraphy Part I, pen and ink, charming commemorative gift of a summer event. Toned, but in
excellent condition. (5.5x7.5) Lots 9 and 10 to be sold together 90
Lot 10 Calligraphy Part II,
ink, poem: Adieu to Summer, from D. Poor to Marietta Spofford.
Dated in pencil on reverse :Rowley, MA, 1840 (6x7)
Lot 11 Messenger of Love Large
fold-down, die-cut, chromolithographed card with pink honeycomb tissue
decoration. Cupid standing among flower bedecked arch, holding a
letter. Colors vivid, cupid has slight crease across top of hair, and
the tail of the dove is missing. Germany, circa 1890

Lot 12 Watermarked Towgood 1851 Delicate
octavo folder embossed in an unusual design that looks like latches on
an album. Central circular area has attached glazed lithograph of
a pensive woman. Early silvered Dresden scrap of Cupid’s quiver
with arrows crossed upon Hymen’s torch. Gray litho. addressed envelope.

Lot 13 Large Unsigned McLoughlin
Pink, white, silver card, with second chromolithographed layer,
topped with another, smaller silvered layer, framing the young girl
seen beneath. Four charming die-cuts. (6x9) 25
Lot 14 Wrigley, England
Wood engraved octavo. Hand-colored image of a man at a writing desk,
sending his missive with a dove at the window, his earlier writing
attempts scattered at his feet, circa 1830. 35

Lot 16 Unrequited Love, or Despondent Lover Series Quarto,
embossed border, aquatint central image of a woman in red dress with
lace portrait collar, letter in hand: Hark, from my lattice,
letter fly… One from a series of fourteen, English, circa
1840. Reserve : 150
Lot 17 McLoughlin-style Victorian square
Valentine. Unusual green and red blank, with white ivy design, overlaid
with lace pattern featuring four lily of the valley posies, and four
small die-cuts of flowers and birds. Embossed square envelope.
